Try hard

My favourite day of the year

Do you remember your adolescent years and wanting to fit in? While never a popular kid, I was mindful of the social hierarchy in the schoolyard so tried not to put myself in any position that would lead to unwanted attention. Impressing my friends was more important to me than impressive grades so acting like I didn’t care by not trying was easier than trying and failing.

As an adult, my view is very different to those days in the schoolyard. While social hierarchies remain in the workplace, we have more control in how we conduct ourselves and engage with others. I am no longer afraid of being called a ‘try hard’ for giving it my all or even failing as I can always try again. I think a strong work ethic is one of the best skills an individual can possess as it serves as the basis for obtaining and developing more skills. Higher intelligence can allow you to learn skills quicker but a strong work ethic will allow you to continue even when things are difficult.

As a parent, I encourage my children to try their hardest all the time. While achieving a goal is exciting and rewarding on the day, instilling a strong work ethic will ensure they strive towards their goals every day.
