Familiar but different

Today, Monday 6 July 2020, my household and I welcome the newest member to our family – Anaya Lisa Mele Redmond.
Birthdays are an interesting celebration. We celebrate our arrivals to this world yet the hard work and trauma to make this possible is experienced by Mum.
With our large and ever expanding family, it is somebody’s birthday here almost every week/month. In fact, Anaya is born on the same day and month as one of my favourite Aunts which is why she is also named after her.
I didn’t enjoy birthdays as a kid. I hated the attention when it was mine and would get jealous when it was someone else’s. I learned something many years ago that immediately changed my view. The ‘Mother all wise and knowing and bringer of life into this world’ once told me that we should celebrate our birthdays for the ones who no longer can. These wise words changed my perspective on the event being about a single person to a celebration for those who love you. I still get uncomfortable with the attention when it’s my day but am grateful to those who helped me there.
Happy birthday, Anaya. You’re in very good hands.
